Digital Food Photography: The Basics…

Lou Manna, an award-winning Olympus Visionary photographer, educator, and author of Digital Food Photography, will lead this workshop for photographers. After working for the New York Times as a photojournalist for fifteen years, Lou established his own
Agenda:
In the morning, Lou will meet with attendees and review each participant’s website or blog and/or photographs, offering individual advice with constructive critique. Following that he will use a Power Point presentation to provide an overview of the basics of digital food photography and tricks of the trade. He will review the different features found on most digital cameras, highlighting how they can be used correctly to photograph in any situation. The afternoon will be dedicated to hands-on practice. Lou will demonstrate how to work with light sources, how to use mirrors, diffusers and small white cards to create mouth-watering photographs even with a simple point and shoot camera. Participants will utilize new skills learned in the workshop to shoot each set up while Lou offers individual guidance to optimize their photographic techniques.
Lunch will be provided.
Participants are required to bring their own camera and shoot in the afternoon.
This workshop is recommended for Beginner/Intermediate photographers.

Digital Food Photography:
Creating Delectable Images with Lou Manna

Course Description: Are you hungry for a new set of photographic skills? Creating images of food that ‘look good enough to eat’ is Lou Manna’s forte, and in this Workshop he will teach you the fundamentals of food photography, including metering, lighting, styling, composing, propping, and choosing backgrounds that will make your work distinctive. This is a great opportunity to learn from one of the best in the business, as he shares his approaches, techniques, and special tricks for photographing different types of food. Additional topics to be discussed are lighting set ups for shooting food on location vs. the studio and importance of modifying your style depending on your client. You will be working in Lou’s studio, which is equipped with a full commercial kitchen and complete shooting space, using different lights, reflectors and mirrors. During the shoot, your images will be viewed on a 40” Hi Definition Monitor and there will be instant feedback given.
Requirements: Familiarity with your digital SLR; bring a DSLR with a close-focusing or macro lens and the wire to connect to a composite RCA video input. Please bring a selection of photographs that you’ve shot. Additionally, bring items for note-taking in this hands-on workshop.

Biography: Lou Manna’s award-winning photographs have appeared in national ad campaigns, major magazines and over forty cookbooks. While working as a photojournalist for the New York Times, Lou developed a passion for food photography as he was creating appealing images to accompany reviews by noted food critic and cookbook author, Craig Claiborne. Lou went on to establish his own studio on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan where he has produced thousands of digital images while working with a wide range of major advertising, corporate and restaurant clients including Barilla, Kraft Foods, Marriott, Starbucks, Kellogg’s and Coca Cola. In this workshop, Lou, along with his professional colleagues, will teach you the fundamentals of food photography, including lighting, metering, styling, composing, propping, and choosing backgrounds that will make your work distinctive. This is a great opportunity to learn from one of the best in the business, as he shares his approaches, techniques, and special tricks for photographing different types of food.
Agenda: Day 1: Lou will meet with attendees and review participants’ portfolios, offering advice with constructive critique. Lou will then present his own portfolio, providing an overview of digital food photography from practical theory to the behind the scenes of professional lighting. In the afternoon, two professionals will demonstrate the intricacies of their craft. Veteran food stylist, Diane Vezza, will show how to style a delicious-looking plate and reveal several tricks of the trade. Prop stylist, Deb Donahue, will show the importance of props, their color, size, style, and shape in evoking the mood and overall feel of your photograph. They will both discuss the importance of having a good working relationship with a photographer to create wonderful results. Day 2: Lou Manna will discuss the essentials of lighting through a Power Point presentation. He will demonstrate the various lighting techniques he uses to create mouth-watering food photographs.
